Sitting With Big Feelings Without Fixing Them

When a feeling arrives with intensity, the first impulse can be to solve it, explain it, or make it disappear. Sometimes the most supportive beginning is to slow down and let the feeling be noticed before deciding what it needs.
Feelings carry information
A feeling is an experience, not an instruction you have to follow. Anger may point toward a boundary, sadness may ask for tenderness, and anxiety may signal that something feels uncertain. You do not have to act on every message to listen respectfully to what is there.
Putting words to an experience can make it feel less shapeless: “I am disappointed,” “I feel pulled in two directions,” or “This is harder than I expected.” Simple language can help you stay close to yourself without turning the moment into a problem to solve.
Presence can come before a plan
Making space does not mean staying stuck. It can mean taking a breath, writing a few honest lines, stepping outside, or sharing what is true with someone who can listen. Once the feeling has been acknowledged, the next choice may become easier to see.
There is no perfect way to move through an emotional moment. A little less urgency and a little more kindness can help you remain connected to your values while the feeling changes in its own time.
